i feel like 'Shua and i kinda hit stride this past monday, because we produced a lot of good work that will get posted soon. it's not that i think my outfits are extra-inspired or inventive, because they were mostly looks that i have worn in the past couple weeks. which means only crazy enough for my museum job or dates.
what really made things work, as far as i am concerned, is the symbiotic relationship between look and medium. 'Shua brought a super-fat felt marker, the noxious-smelling kind. understanding the capabilities of that tool, i geared toward outfits that were black and had strong lines, the better to be graphic.
this shell and skirt set is another bit of plunder from my mother's mother. she was probably a head shorter than i am, and much, much curvier. which is not to say big-boned. she had a little waist and a very, very large chest. several of my female relatives have inherited that shape, but not i.
one thing i would mention about the translation between garment and illustration-- there is complex beadwork on the hip-section of the shell. obviously, it didn't make the cut, and it might be invisible in the photograph, but it's there. really gorgeous garment, but sometimes you have to make the choice between showing the detail (ornate) and communicating the feeling (streamlined).
